PRINCEVILLE, NORTH SHORE KAUAI
Mauna Kai is in Princeville, a residential resort community between Kilauea and Hanalei. There are groceries, coffee, restaurants, and Makai Golf Club nearby. The Wyllie Beach trail leads down to the east end of Anini Beach, and Hanalei town and the bay are a short drive away.

Hanalei town is about 3.5 miles from Mauna Kai. It's usually a 10 to 15 minute drive in normal conditions. Allow extra time for traffic and check road closures. Browse the town’s shops, then head to the bay and pier. Swimming and paddling depend on daily ocean conditions.
Learn in Hanalei Bay with a Native Hawaiian owned and operated surf school. The 90-minute lessons combine beach instruction in paddling, standing up, ocean safety, and etiquette with time in the water. A soft-top board, leash, and rash guard are provided, with group and private options. Explore the lessons or book directly with the school.
Walk the shoreline, relax under the trees, or snorkel when conditions are calm and safe. Anini is also an easy place to slow down for a few hours.
You don't have to play golf to see the coastal views here. Makai’s guided sunset golf cart tour lasts about two hours and includes stops overlooking the ocean, with stories about the course, plants, and wildlife. Check tour details and book ahead.

Visit Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge for seabirds, coastal views, and the lighthouse, then stop in Kīlauea town for lunch. Advance reservations are required for visitors ages 16 and older. Reserve entry and check current visitor information before driving over.
You'll see tropical gardens, bronze sculptures, lagoons, and a Japanese teahouse. Choose a walking tour or a guided cart tour; garden visits require reservations, and age requirements vary by tour. Known for its broad reef, Tunnels is a place for beach time and snorkeling when ocean conditions allow. Use designated public access and legal parking. For a garden walk near the end of the road, Limahuli’s self-guided loop is about 0.75 mile with a 200-foot climb and stairs. Reserve ahead, especially if you need parking; guided tours require reservations. See garden access and tour options.

At the end of Kūhiō Highway, Kē‘ē Beach shares Hā‘ena State Park with the Kalalau Trail trailhead. Beach access alone still requires a reservation for visitors who are not Hawai‘i residents. Reserve parking plus entry, or a shuttle with entry, up to 30 days ahead. From the parking area or shuttle stop, allow for a roughly one-third-mile walk to the beach and trailhead. Book through GoHā‘ena and check current conditions and closures.
Hā‘ena State Park and the Kalalau Trail remain closed. These route details are for future planning; wait for official reopening before attempting the hikes.
From Kē‘ē, the Kalalau Trail reaches Hanakāpīʻai Beach after 2 miles each way: a 4-mile return hike over uneven coastal terrain. Continuing inland to the falls makes it an 8-mile return hike for experienced hikers and a full-day outing. Hā‘ena day-use reservations cover both routes. Do not swim at Hanakāpīʻai Beach or cross flooded streams. Continuing west beyond Hanakāpīʻai Valley along the Kalalau Trail requires an overnight camping permit, even for a day hike. The Nā Pali Coast has steep sea cliffs and deep valleys. You can see the wider coastline on a boat or air tour, or walk its eastern end on the Kalalau Trail from Kē‘ē.
